Glaucoma

Glaucoma - The Silent Thief of Your Eyesight.

When it comes to signs of any eye disease, most people are blind to the facts.

And glaucoma is no exception to the captioned fact.

Before proceeding any further on glaucoma, let's understand the following:

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that develop because of elevated intra-ocular pressure (IOP) within the eye.

The increased pressure affects the optic nerve and may cause permanent vision loss.

Glaucoma is categorized either as open-angle (the more common form that is usually painless, progressive and irreversible) or angle-closure glaucoma (which often occurs suddenly and is associated with pain and redness of the eye and is reversible to some extent).

In the incipient phases of glaucoma there are often no symptoms.

The damage is permanent by the time the vision is affected.

Progression of glaucoma can be slowed or halted with eye drops, laser treatments, or surgery; thus, early diagnosis is the solution.

People with a positive family history of glaucoma, the elderly myopic, any history of trauma or ocular surgery are at an increased risk of this disease.

Post 40, please have regular eye examination by your ophthalmologist.
