Know the common Corneal causes of eye pain !

Your eye pain can source out from a variety of causes. It is typically categorized into conditions that affect the cornea, conditions that affect the other parts of the eye, and other conditions involving different areas of the body that can cause pain to be experienced in the eye area.

But the common causes of eye pain characteristically are around particular parts of the eye, which include the cornea, the white of the eye (sclera), and a thin layer that covers it, known as the conjunctiva, whereas the colored part of the eye is called the iris.

The muscles controlling the eye, the nerves, and the eyelids can also source out any type of eye pain.

Few Corneal Disorders

The function of the cornea is to contribute to the vision and also filter UV light radiating from the sun.

Any problem with the cornea is the most common cause of eye pain. The cornea being the outermost layer of the eye has a clear dome-shaped surface that covers the front part of the eye.

A host of disorders affecting the cornea also distresses the fluid-filled space between the iris and the inner part of the cornea.

The cornea helps in keeping dirt, germs, and other detrimental or foreign particles that could potentially harm the eye at bay. It is also very helpful while filtering out the otherwise damaging ultraviolet light (UV) from the sun.

One of the most common causes of eye pain is a corneal ulcer. It is an eye infection that causes an open sore on the corneal surface. Foreign body exposure, Contact lenses, injuries, drugs, and nutritional deficiencies can cause such open sores. Ulcers lead to pain, redness, and tearing.

The cornea can heal from minor injuries or scratches, just like any other body organ. The inflamed area usually heals on its own with no lasting impact on the vision of the patient.

More severe injuries can lead to corneal scarring resulting in a haze on the cornea that can impair vision. People who have sustained a deep injury or corneal disease may experience:

  •        Pain in the eye
  •        Sensitivity to light
  •        Reduced vision or blurry vision
  •        Redness or inflammation in the eye
  •        Headache
  •        Nausea or fatigue
  •        Bulging of an eye
  •        Inability to move the eye in all directions

People with corneal disease or damage may experience pain, tearing, and a decrease in the sharpness of their vision.

Seek Help

If you are experiencing any of these unusual eye symptoms, you should contact an eye professional immediately. Corneal disease like any other eye disorder can only be diagnosed after a thorough eye examination.
